One of the things that has been very interesting to me over the last couple years is solar and wind generation - and in particular, the idea of creating a data collection and reporting system that would allow a utility with many small scale (compared to traditional plants) power providers (home solar, wind, etc.) to monitor and ultimately predict and use the output from distributed generators properly and efficiently, figure them in to the calculations of purchasing and shipping grid power, etc.. It may not be such a huge thing now, but in not too much time, I think that there will be a lot more distributed generators, and the power generated will have significant impact on grid load and supply calculations.
